Get Your Business License — by Locality

Each locality in the Roanoke Valley has its own process for obtaining a business license. Find yours below and start there first.

The Commonwealth of Virginia and the federal government also require the following:

• Corporations must file incorporation papers with the Virginia State Corporation Commission — call (804) 371-9733 or visit scc.virginia.gov
• Businesses using a fictitious or assumed name must register it with the Virginia SCC
• Businesses not using a sole proprietor's SSN must obtain a Federal EIN from the IRS — visit irs.gov
• All businesses must register for Sales and Use Tax with the Virginia Department of Taxation — call (804) 367-8037 or visit tax.virginia.gov

Money — You'll be funding from your own pocket or donations. Grants and loans exist but take planning.

• Grants typically require completing a project and documenting progress set by the grantor.
• Loans work like student loans — only take them out once your business has started, or they attach to your personal finances.
